Musings on Dario Argento
Are the works of Dario Argento semi-autobiographical?
There are lots of interesting bits & pieces about the works of Argento, such as many of his films feature his wife, and their relationship can be charted throughout his body of work (in earlier films she is a strong heroin, whereas in later films, she often gets killed), I’m not sure how far we should delve into his somewhat bizarre relationship with his daughter – there are clearly some issues there.
His film Opera (1987), features the main character, being forced to watch the grizzly deaths of her friends; a reaction by Argento to the criticisms of many on his gory films, but the constant high viewing numbers – he is forcing us to watch the gore. The same film also features a former horror director, that has moved into theatre, and is considered a ‘master’ of horror, but a failure in theatre.
An interesting subject that deserves more research I think.
